I've just added a service I get asked about more than almost anything else: edible photo printing. Send me a picture, and I can print it directly onto icing and set it on top of a cake or across a whole box of cupcakes.

How it actually works

Your photo is printed using edible ink onto a thin sheet of icing, which is then trimmed and laid onto a smooth iced surface — usually a simple buttercream or sugarpaste top, so the picture has a clean, flat canvas to sit on. It's completely edible, tastes like a very thin layer of icing, and the colour and detail hold up far better than most people expect.

Cake or cupcakes?

A single photo works beautifully as the centrepiece of a full cake — a favourite family photo, a pet, a holiday snap, a baby scan. For cupcakes, I usually print one image and cut it into a grid across a dozen or two dozen toppers, so the picture only comes together once the box is opened, or I'll mix in a few different photos across the batch for a proper memory board in cake form.

What makes a good photo

  • Well-lit and reasonably high resolution — phone photos are fine, screenshots and heavily cropped images print less crisply
  • Simple backgrounds print more clearly than busy, cluttered ones
  • Faces and pets are the most popular choice, but logos, artwork and text work just as well
  • Send the original file rather than a photo of a photo where you can — it makes a real difference to the print

Where it works especially well

Milestone birthdays with a throwback photo, anniversaries with a wedding day shot, retirement cakes with an old work photo, memorial and tribute cakes, or simply a cupcake box printed with a pet's face for someone who'll appreciate the joke. It's also lovely for corporate orders — a logo printed cleanly across a batch of cupcakes reads far better than a fondant cutout.

As with any bespoke order, just get in touch with your photo and the occasion, and I'll talk you through sizing and lead time — the edible print itself is quick, but it still sits within the usual notice period for your cake or cupcakes.

It still has to taste like a proper cake underneath — the photo is just the icing on top, quite literally.
